Protecting Our Future
The Problem
Our state is in crisis. In 2009 state lawmakers grappled with a nearly $9 billion budget deficit, a wowing economic crisis that threatened every aspect of what government is supposed to protect: the poor, the vulnerable, our schools and universities, parks and much, much more.
As we head into a the 2010 session of the Washington State Legislature, state economists say we must cut another $2 billion to create a balanced budget.
The Solution
At Fuse, we believe it is government’s job to defend Washington’s working families against the impacts of the economic crisis and toward that end, our members will be advocating for a balanced approach to the State’s bleak budget situation by balancing more cuts with new revenues to protect core investments in schools, health care, and other critical public services.
Further we will call on lawmakers to support initiatives to bring good jobs to the state and put people back to work.
We believe we must invest well in order to protect the future. Toward that end, Fuse will be advocating for:
- Investments and policies that reduce global warming pollution and build a clean energy economy.
- Reforms that give people a stronger voice in the political process and reduce the impact of big money and powerful special interests in politics.
- Reforms that prevent industry abuses like predatory mortgage lending and protect public health by removing toxic chemicals from baby bottles.
- Reforms that expand health care coverage and reduce industry abuses.
- Programs and polities that protect critical health care programs for low income and out of work families.
- Funding for quality K-12 education.
- Increasing to affordable higher education
